In 2018 the Sighet Memorial was visited by 37.227 students (individual or group visits)
In 2018, tens of groups of secondary and high school students visited the Memorial throughout the year as part of the programme School Otherwise.
The staff ot the Sighet Memorial conducted dozens of guided tours for students.
Round tables, meetings, workshops
March 9-12: Workshops with 10 students from the University of Bucharest, Babeş-Bolyai University (Cluj), “Alecu Russo” University, Bălţi (Republic of Moldova), the University of Chişinău (Republic of Moldova), organized in the framework of the conference Centennial Celebration of the Great Union, Basarabia 1918-2018.
April 24: Remember the victims of the totalitarian regime, workshop with students of the “King Ferdinand” High School, Sighetu Marmației, part of an educational project, Fostering the memory of martyrs in the Sighet Prison, coordinated by Father Prof. Dr. Vasile Iusco, whose main objective was to raise awareness on the main ideas and principles of a democracy and to “foster an appropriate behaviour in today’s society by perceiving martyrdom as a supreme virtue of love and of leading a Christian life”.
May 17: Discussion and visit of students to the Sighet Memorial: In memory of Archbishop Anton Durcovici. A group of 40 students from Iași, along with Father Dr. Fabian Doboș, participated to the annual visit organized to the Sighet Memorial. A discussion was held at the Sighet Memorial, moderated by Andrea Dobeș, historian from the Sighet Memorial, who finally joined the group on a tour of the Memorial and of the Paupers’ Cemetery, which was converted into a park of memory.
October 8: A Century of History, meeting with students of School No 62 from Bucharest’s 2nd district.
October 11-14: Workshop with 10 students from the Department of European Studies, Babeş-Bolyai University, Cluj, organized in the framework of the conference the Centennial Celebration of the Great Union: Unification of Transilvania with Romania.
November 12: On the Centennial Celebration, in a different manner, meeting with students of the “George Coșbuc” National High School from Bucharest.
November 20: Personalities of the Great Union who were detained in Sighet, workshop with students from the Technological Forestry High School in Sighetu Marmației, coordinated by history teacher, Ioana Csillik.
November 29: Memory and History in the Context of the Centennial Celebration of the Great Union, meeting with students of the “Calistrat Hogaș” National High School, Piatra Neamț.
January-December: Discussions with secondary and high school pupils who visited the Memorial as part of the programme School Otherwise.
Dialogues with the victims of the communist totalitarian regime
Friday, April 27: on the occasion of the launch of An Illustrated Guide to Romanian Communism – The Party Wants You Clean Cut, edited by the Forum Apulum Association from Alba Iulia, a debate was organized at the Sighet Memorial between Ion Ilban, former political detainee, and 200 high school pupils from Sighetu Marmației. The discussion was moderated by Andrea Dobeș and history teacher Marius Voinaghi, who talked about the need to learn about Communist repression in high school.
May 17: students of the Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj, coordinated by Prof. Ruxandra Cesereanu, joined former political prisoners for the celebration of the Day of Memory, thus entering into an inter-generational dialogue.
December 18: a meeting was held in the Memorial’s conference hall between 11th grade pupils of the Technological Forestry High School in Sighetu Marmației and Mr. Petru Codrea, a former political prisoner. The discussion was moderated by Andrea Dobeș, historian and researcher at the Sighet Memorial and Ioana Csillik, history teacher.
Sighet Summer School – Jubilee edition (15-16 July 2018)
To celebrate 25 years from the beginning of the Sighet Memorial and 20 years from the first edition of the Sighet Summer School, between 15-16 July, former students and lecturers met again to the Sighet Memorial to speak about what represented this experience to them (memories, meanings, influences, consequences).
