The international conference Forum for History Education, titled Sites of Memories: Learning Spaces for Democracy, organised by the Council of Europe, was held in Belgrade on 2-4 November.

Virginia Ion, scientific secretary and Andrea Dobeș Furtos, chief museographer presented the Civic Academy Foundation’s successful project, the Memorial to the Victims of Communism and to the Resistance, which was featured as a case study for special sites of remembrance and learning spaces promoting democratic values.

The conference endeavoured to contribute to the relaunch of intergovernmental history programmes; to reflect on the role of places of remembrance, not only in history education but also in promoting human rights and citizens’ rights; to present best practices with examples from different aspects of European history; to foster dialogue and collaboration among public authorities, research institutes, educators, and scholars to ensure that places of remembrance will be utilised for educational purposes.
