GUIDED TOURS OF THE SIGHET MEMORIAL AND OF THE EXHIBITION WOMEN AS ENEMIES OF THE PEOPLE AT THE EXHIBITION SPACE OF THE SIGHET MEMORIAL IN BUCHAREST, AND WORKSHOPS ON THE HISTORY OF COMMUNISM, ORGANISED OR HOSTED BY THE CIVIC ACADEMY FOUNDATION

 

Study visit of law students from Cluj and Miskolc to the Sighet Memorial

On 27 March, the Sighet Memorial was visited by students and professors from the Department of Legal Sciences of Sapientia University Cluj-Napoca, and from the Faculty of Law of the University of Miskolc (Hungary).

They were led on a guided tour of the museum by Annamaria Bobrovsky, museum educator.

 

 

A group of pupils from Orizont Lower Secondary School visits the exhibition Women as Enemies of the People

 On Friday 1 April, a group of 7th graders from Orizont Lower Secondary School visited the exhibition Women as Enemies of the People guided by Virginia Ion, the curator of the exhibition.

 

 

Virtual visit of the pupils from Ioan Slavici Upper Secondary School in Panciu at the Sighet Memorial

The pupils from Ioan Slavici Upper Secondary School in Panciu visited the Sighet Memorial on Friday 8 April. Although the tour was a virtual one, we hope to welcome them in an in-person visit to Sighet in the near future.

The pupils were guided by our colleague Dr. Andrea Dobeș Furtos, museographer. The focus of the tour was on presenting the exhibition Collectivisation: Resistance and Repression.

 

 

Study visit to the exhibition Women as Enemies of the People

The participants of the curatorship training course organised by the National Institute for Cultural Research and Training explored on Wednesday 13 April the exhibition Women as Enemies of the People showcased at the Bucharest office of the Memorial to the Victims of Communism and to the Resistance.

The visitors were taken on a tour of the exhibition by Virginia Ion, its curator, and by architect Constantin Goagea, coordinator of the exhibition design team.

 

 

A group of pupils from Central School visits the exhibition Women as Enemies of the People

 11th graders from the Central School in Bucharest, accompanied by their history teacher Mihai Dodu, visited the exhibition Women as Enemies of the People on Thursday 14 April, guided by Virginia Ion and Ioana Boca.

After the guided tour of the exhibition, the pupils also watched the film Bless you, prison by Nicolae Mărgineanu, which ran on the first floor of the Memorial to the Victims of Communism and to the Resistance in Bucharest. The film is an adaptation of the book written by Nicole Valéry Grossu about her years in communist prisons.

 

 

Pupils from Dragoș Vodă Upper Secondary School visit the Sighet Memorial

On Monday 9 May, the Memorial to the Victims of Communism welcomed the pupils from Dragoș Vodă Upper Secondary School in Sighet and their accompanying teachers Cornelia Hotea and Marius Voinaghi. They were guided through the Memorial by Dr. Andrea Furtos. They were also the inaugural visitors to the European Heritage Label exhibition, mounted in the inner courtyard of the Sighet Memorial.

 

 

Study visit to the permanent exhibition space of the Sighet Memorial in Bucharest

 On 21 May, a group of German students on a fact-finding trip to Romania accompanied by Pastor Steffen Tuschling visited the Memorial to the Victims of Communism and to the Resistance in Bucharest. Their visit was part of the Ecumenical Semester in Sibiu. The students visited the exhibition Women as Enemies of the People and later engaged in a discussion on recent history with Dr. Nicolae Drăgușin.

 

 

Pupils from Radu cel Mare Lower Secondary School in Târgoviște visit the Sighet Memorial

 

On 18 May, our Memorial welcomed the online visit of a group of pupils from Radu cel Mare Lower Secondary School in Târgoviște together with their teacher Georgeta Grigore. The guided tour of the Sighet Memorial was given by Dr. Andrea Dobeș Furtos.

 

 

Study visit of a group of students from Babeș-Bolyai University Cluj (BBU) to the Sighet Memorial

On May 29, a group of 40 students from the Department of Comparative Literature, accompanied by Prof. Ruxandra Cesereanu, conducted a study visit to the Sighet Memorial. The guided tour and discussions with the students were facilitated by Andrea Dobeș and Norbert Kondrat.

Since 2001, on an annual basis, Prof. Ruxandra Cesereanu has been dedicating an entire day to delivering lectures at the Memorial, introducing and raising awareness among students about the themes related to the 45 years of communist repression. During these sessions, students have the opportunity to explore and engage with the documentary materials showcased in the museum’s 50 rooms.

 

 

Study visit of the students from Babeș-Bolyai University Cluj (BBU) to the Sighet Memorial

Students from the Faculty of History of the BBU together with Prof. Virgiliu Țârău visited the Sighet Memorial in July.

The visit began in the conference room of the Memorial with a discussion about the repressive system in communist Romania, moderated by Dr. Andrea Furtos, chief museographer at the Sighet Memorial, and Prof. Virgiliu Țârău. Subsequently, the group embarked on a guided tour of the Memorial, led by our colleagues Andrea Furtos and Norbert Kondrat.

 

 

Students from the Faculty of History of the University of Bucharest visit the exhibition Women as Enemies of the People on 15 July

Students from the Faculty of History of the University of Bucharest visited the exhibition Women as Enemies of the People. Their guide was Virginia Ion, curator of the exhibition.

 

 

Pupils from ARCA Afterschool Educational Centre Suceava visit the Memorial

On 16 July, a group of pupils from the ARCA Educational Centre in Suceava visited the Sighet Memorial. The guided tour and the discussions with the pupils were led by Andrea Furtos.

 

 

On vacation at the museum: children from Ukraine visit the Sighet Memorial

On 3 August, a group of children from Ukraine, who were attending a summer camp in Maramureș, visited the Memorial. The children were accompanied by Mrs Gabriela Rosus. The camp is organised by Hope and Homes for Children Romania.

Eighty-six children from Serbia and Romania, participants in the International Camp ‘Grăind, horind, trăind’ (Speak, sing, live) held Maramureș from 11 to 18 August, visited the Sighet Memorial on Saturday. They were guided by Annamaria Bobrovsky, museum educator.

 

 

Attendees at the 4th edition of the Brătianu Chess Cup visit the Sighet Memorial

Forty students participating in the 4th edition of the Brătianu Chess Cup, held from 19 to 21 August in Sighet, took a break from the competition to visit the Memorial to the Victims of Communism. Norbert Kondrat, museum educator, guided them through the Memorial.

 

 

Visit of the participants representing Maramureș at the Olympiad to the Sighet Memorial, 23 August

On 23 August, our Memorial welcomed 27 pupils attending the camp for Olympians in history, geography, and social sciences. The camp is part of the project Maramureș Supports Excellence, led by the Maramureș County School Inspectorate with backing from the Maramureș County Council.

The pupils were accompanied by their teacher, Marius Voinaghi, who also serves as project coordinator. The museum’s guided tour was conducted by our colleagues Andrea Dobeș, chief museographer, and Luminita Tânțaș, museum educator.

 

 

The attendees of the 15th edition of the International Summer Law School 2022 visit the Sighet Memorial

On Friday 2 September 2022, the attendees of the 15th edition of the International Summer Law School, focusing on Tangible and Intangible National Cultural Heritage, held from 28 August to 4 September 2022 in Săpânța, Maramureș County, visited the Sighet Memorial. The guided tour of the museum was given by Dr Andrea Dobeș, chief museographer.

 

 

Guided tours for students

 In August, pupils and teachers from the Jacques M Elias Technological Upper Secondary School in Sascut, Bacău County, participated in a guided tour of the Sighet Memorial. This visit was included in the trip themed ‘Let’s not forget the heroes in the dungeons’, under the coordination of Prof. Maria Pascu. Luminița Țintaș, a museum educator at the Sighet Memorial, served as their guide.

 

 

Work placement at the museum

For a week, 11th graders specialising in tourism from the Forestry Technological Upper Secondary School in Sighet underwent practical training at the Sighet Memorial, gaining hands-on experience as museum guides. During this period, each student selected an exhibition to present to their peers.

The coordination of the traineeship was overseen by Prof. Adina Costinar, and Luminița Țînțaș, museum educator.
