May 8, 2000, Sighet: “Fifty years from the arrests of 5-6 May 1950 – destruction of Romanian elite”

On the occasion of 50 years since the arrest and imprisonment of the Romanian dignitaries in the Sighet prison, FAC organised a commemorative meeting in the conference room of the Sighet Memorial. Among the participants were family members of the Sighet prisoners: Ioana Bratianu – daughter of the historian Gheorghe Bratianu, Ionut Gherasim – nephew of the National Peasants’ Party leader Ilie Lazar, D.G. Niculescu – relative of the politician Constantin Argetoianu. The film producer Lucia Hossu-Longin and the historians Andrea Dobes, Claudiu Secasiu and Nutu Rosca also addressed the participants. The facilitators were Ana Blandiana and Romulus Rusan. Also participating were Nicolae Noica, Vice-president of FAC and Gheorghe Mihai Barlea, FAC representative at Sighet, the Bishop Vicar Justin Sighteanul, orthodox and Greek – Catholic priests. The event enjoyed the presence of a public comprising professors, historians, students, journalists, members of the Sighet and Maramures anticommunist resistance, representatives of the local authorities.
