The UnSettled Scholarships Summer School’s second edition, organised by Freedom House Romania in collaboration with the Civic Academy Foundation, took place from 19 to 28 July 2021 at the Memorial to the Victims of Communism and to the Resistance in Sighet.
Under the motto ‘Learning from Our Past to Build the Future’, roughly 100 students, split into three successive groups, came together for the event, all passionate about delving into the history of communism. The Sighet Summer School aimed to bring to the fore the need to raise awareness about the repercussions of the communist regime, and the need to advocate for democratic values, and human rights.
The Summer School schedule was packed, featuring multiple conferences and workshops every day.
Ana Blandiana, the founder of the Sighet Memorial, delivered the opening lecture.
Notable guests included Germina Nagâț, Virgiliu Țârău, Monica Macovei, Doina Jela, Brîndușa Armanca, Simona Preda, Ioan Țiplea, and Grigorie Benea. Participants attended several guided tours of the Sighet Memorial and of Paupers’ Cemetery, which is an essential component of the Memorial. Additionally, the program featured a visit to the Elie Wiesel Memorial House.
