On Friday 13 January, we had the pleasure of joining another online history lesson within the educational project The Museum @ my school.
During this lesson, Virginia Ion, the scientific secretary of the Memorial to the Victims of Communism and to the Resistance, spoke to the 11th graders from Ioan Slavici Upper Secondary School in Panciu, who were coordinated by Mrs. Gabriela Pricop, about the process of collectivization, and about three of the largest conflicts between peasants and communist authorities, which unfolded between November 1957 and January 1958 in the villages of Suraia, Vadu Roșca, and Răstoaca in Vâlcea County.
In addition to its educational purpose, the event also commemorated the 65th anniversary of the three riots, which resulted in the conviction of 72 people, 9 fatalities, and numerous injuries.
The educational initiative The Museum @ my school is a collaborative effort of the Memorial to the Victims of Communism and to the Resistance and the Ioan Slavici Upper Secondary School in Panciu. The partnership between the two institutions is in its second year and seeks to raise awareness among pupils about themes related to the repression during the 45 years of the communist regime in Romania. This is achieved through meetings with former political prisoners from that era and lessons led by researchers from the Memorial.
