Leader of the Moldavian National Party, one of the proponents of the Union of Bessarabia with Romania, former president of the Council of Ministers of the Independent Republic of Moldavia, then minister of state, representing Bessarabia in four governments.
Arrested on 5/6 May 1950, he is supposed to have died – according to C. C. Giurescu – on 6 May, at Turda, during the transportation of former dignitaries to the Sighet penitentiary. According to the records of the Securitate, he died on 19 May 1950, in the Sighet penitentiary. His death certificate was not drawn up until 1957.
